Bi-Lingual Tenant Organizer
The tenant organizer position includes facilitating tenant meetings, and assisting in the formation of tenant associations. The new Tenant Organizer will also work with NHN’s current Organizer to support and develop tenant leaders working with the local tenant group UNA (United Neighbors in Action) conducting leadership trainings and offering one-on-one mentoring to tenants who emerge as leaders.
The position includes promoting tenants’ rights through informational workshops, and working through coalitions and the political process on the local and city-wide levels to defend affordable housing and the rights of low-income renters.
As a part of organizing the Tenant Organizer will provide one-on-one counseling to NHN’s walk-in clientele of tenants facing housing problems: livability and repair issues, rent and eviction issues, and landlord harassment. He/she will: advise them and advocate with them to secure their rights; mediate with landlords; help them to navigate housing court; network with other agencies and providers; and help them to access whatever housing-related public subsidies may be available to them.
